June's LibRR2 Step One

Initial Blocks

I received these two blocks from Marie in the World Wide Swap last Spring - they were the only two traditional blocks that I could find in my stash....

I really like the points in the stars.... They are made of a HST but the second side has two equal pieces.

I decided to take the blocks apart - so as I was watching TV tonight, I ripped them apart (I felt so crafty while I was doing this!)....

So now I have all the pieces and have been working on rearranging them....

A swirl of fabric?

Will I put them in swirl going out to make a hurricane of fabric?  I saw some art in an airport in the past week (perhaps in Kingston Jamaica)- where there was a white pattern that swirled out on a white background that caught my eye.

Rows of Points?

Or will I make rows of the points separated by white blocks....?

Or will it be one long columns of points?

Column of Points?

I haven't decided yet - But wanted to be in on the party of posting things for the LibRR2 so am posting even before I decided how to resew these pieces!  I may just wait for Step Two before sewing - not sure now!  I just know I'm going to make this into at least a lap quilt!

My Progress so far...

11-26-11 - Basted what I had in my LibRR.

11-30-11  Divided the top into sections and started to quilt each one with a different design.

11-30-11  Second section done.

12-1-11 FMQed a third section. (Hardwood Floor design)

12-1-11 Here is what it looks like on back!

12-2-11 Another section done!

12-4-11 Getting more creative with section five.

12-4-11 I like the back as much as the front!

12-4-11 What I have pieced so far is now quilted.

At this point though we had a bunch of workmen in the house (removing cottage cheese, putting in lights, and painting.  I had to move everything or cover it up to protect it - not just sewing room but all the rooms!  I finally found my fabric again so will be continuing with the project now!

On to Round 3 Rectangles and Round 4 Curves for me!

June's Lib RR Round Two - Squares

I added squares cut out of the World Wide Swap fabric.  I did use templates and rotary to cut these as it was difficult with all the seams.

I was going to put the squares at different angles, but decided to keep them oriented so they are all at the same - but they show movement by where they are in the distance from the triangles and distance from each other.

This piece is now 30" x 31" - I'm probably going to trim it so it's square.

Either before or after my round three (rectangles), I'm going to add something to make this so it's more lap sized....

June's Lib RR Round One - Triangles

Here are my triangles!

I did the first side (it's on the left in this photo) ages ago then had happy distractions.  I was originally planning on making two sets of triangles as I did when I was making some flying geese a while back.  But when I tried to make the reverse geese things just would not line up (as I am using the presewn fabric I received in the World Wide Swap) and it looked sloppy and unusable to me.

So I changed my method for making the triangles.  I cut the grey fabric strips then used the rotary to cut out triangles.  Using different colored pins I put three pins in the fabric for each triangle, (so each was color coded and I was able to remember which pieces went where).  Then I used the grey triangle as a template and cut swap material fabric.  Then I sewed the short side up - then I pressed the seam open and sewed the other side up.

Before joining to the center block I straightened up the edges...  But my project is no longer square - it measures between 19 and 21 inches depending on which side is being measured!  It's all flat though so I'm happy with that.

These were the original types of triangles I wanted to make - but I've pretty much mastered this method now so will try not to use it again soon.

I wanted to try the QAYG method for adding rows that Sara described but since I'm behind with the challenge and have used my pins for another project that is waiting to be FMQed, I am just going to go ahead with adding my squares to this project...

So now on to Round 2!

June's Lib RR Center Block

I decided to follow Clare, Wendy and Jan's lead and to use material I received as part of the World Wide Swap.

"Scarlet Letter" Marie  sent me a lovely collection of in-progress crumb blocks that will make a great quilt.

Initially I was going to sew blocks to together and then trim and call that my block. But I wasn't sure I would have enough 'fabric' to carry it thru to the rest of the quilt.  My second plan was to make a circle with the materials, then I would be highlighting the fabrics, and I'd have space to do Free Motion Quilting!

It's been a long time since I've made any circles, so I had to look online for help.  I found a lot, but this clear tutorial really worked for me so I used her procedure to make the half circle that is at the bottom of the photo above.  I didn't remember sewing each quarter in two passes when I made circle before, but that extra step made it much easier to do than I remembered!

In real life there was not enough contrast with the grey, (And I've been using that shade of grey for my Friday Block Lotto blocks so I wanted to save that grey fabric for that quilt!) so I removed the stitches and pulled out some darker grey (it looks like blue in the photo).




I used the bottom of a cookie tin for the circle size - and I cut squares that were 7.5 inches for the background.

This photo shows the four pieces before they were trimmed.  For a while I considered adding material to make an "X" pattern, but then decided to stick with my original plan.

So here, finally, is my center or initial block for the Liberated Round Robin!
