Squares and scraps

As we've been going forward I've been consulting with the Liberated Quiltmaking book. I love the notion of sewing scraps together & you can see that I kind of went nuts doing it. I started off with the square within a square using the hand cut square for a less severe look. Then, I needed spacers which is when I really got into the scrap business.

I had thought that just adding onto one side would look ok, but I was mistaken and so put more scraps on the other side for balance. I think the next round should help unify this, or I hope so!

I am utterly inspired by this blog!

My Progress so far...

11-26-11 - Basted what I had in my LibRR.

11-30-11  Divided the top into sections and started to quilt each one with a different design.

11-30-11  Second section done.

12-1-11 FMQed a third section. (Hardwood Floor design)
12-1-11 Here is what it looks like on back!
12-2-11 Another section done!
12-4-11 Getting more creative with section five.
12-4-11 I like the back as much as the front!
12-4-11 What I have pieced so far is now quilted.
At this point though we had a bunch of workmen in the house (removing cottage cheese, putting in lights, and painting.  I had to move everything or cover it up to protect it - not just sewing room but all the rooms!  I finally found my fabric again so will be continuing with the project now!

On to Round 3 Rectangles and Round 4 Curves for me!

Next up: Squares

Since I waited so long to get started with this challenge and then decided to take it up again in the middle of the Christmas season (what was I thinking, right?), and I found this charm pack from Andover fabrics that just so happened to fit in with my party theme, the Squares border is a simple one with the cornerstones being the charm squares.  One says 'Fiesta' in the print, so that has become the name of this top. Are you feelin' it?

A little progress at last!

I'm not sure what step I'm up to, but I've had fun today playing with my round robin. This is my first attempt at liberated letters and I'm quite happy with them. Thanks Nancie for all the hints I found in your previous posts about this.

I'm thinking of filling the gap under the letters with strings and then maybe making a border all round with the green batik. Then I'll face the curves!

Round 2 Squares

Oops - I didn't post in order!

I went crazy making these squares. The idea was a square within a square and then it wasn't a good fit so I started just channelling Gwen and sewing scraps together. I really got into it! The new "fabric" I made was gorgeous. I also love the asymmetry.

I am constantly inspired by other members of this group and am loving the results of this exposure. Thanks to all!

June's Lib RR Round Two - Squares

I added squares cut out of the World Wide Swap fabric.  I did use templates and rotary to cut these as it was difficult with all the seams.

I was going to put the squares at different angles, but decided to keep them oriented so they are all at the same - but they show movement by where they are in the distance from the triangles and distance from each other.

This piece is now 30" x 31" - I'm probably going to trim it so it's square.

Either before or after my round three (rectangles), I'm going to add something to make this so it's more lap sized....

Round 2 squares

Finished this round tonight, and quilted the last [bottom] border after adding it.  I wasn't sure I wanted to add on all four sides, so there was an "incubation" period while I watched a waited for direction.  Finally with the change in colors and size, it seemed like the right thing to add the bottom border in squares also.

The top squares are printed on the fabric, so no complicated construction was required.  I liked the idea of having one "regular" set of checkerboards that were NOT wonky to show that this was indeed intended to be a "squares" border.

The other three borders were pieced in a slightly wonky way.

So far the "quilt as you go" method is working well.  Current size is 25" x 31"

Me and You: True Blue

Today I've officially caught up with an added Round of square patches, stars, and letters. Having fun with this one!  Rectangles coming up.

Round 2 Encore

Okay! Forget my last post about Round 2.

There has been a massive rethink and a lot of frogging (rippit rippit).

I'm still not happy with it, but I think I can now see where the problem lies.

I've got to continue the next round with blue and then do the same big black border.  It may not be liberated, but it's continuity.

This is so fun!

This is so much fun. There is such a feeling of accomplishment for each new addition.

Now just to get to the rectangles so I can catch up with the rest of you.

Blue & White Squares - Sophie's Round 2

Here are my borders for round 2:

Borders for Round 2: Squares

I immediately thought of log cabins as a representation of squares. The large ones are 3-inches–I described the stamped foundation on my blog, here: Log Cabin Squares. For the smaller white ones, I used the same foundations, but didn't add the last round of logs. They are 2-inches. The letters in the word border are based on squares (and have quite a few squares in their construction.) The word row is approximately 4 1/2 inches tall.

Here's how the borders look, sewn in place.

With the first two "rounds" added

The piece is still, definitely rather L-shaped. I hope to remedy that with round 3.

Because I am always curious about how big the other LibRR's are, I measured mine for you. It's approximately 26 inches tall and 28 inches wide at the bottom edge.

Like Sue R., a theme has emerged for me . . . though it may not yet be obvious to anyone else ;-)

Rounds 2 and 3!

I left town to go to my stepson's wedding and you guys did Rounds 2 and 3!  I had to play catch-up.  Round 2 was squares.  Hmmm...my squares are log cabins and I tried putting them around the triangles, but the design was less than pleasing, so I took out some of the triangles and installed log cabins.  Then I decided it needed a border and Round 3 was strips.  How fortunate.  So a mostly blue, some green, and a little pink piano key border was next.  It's the start of a happy quilt, but it's getting big, it's 31" x 44" now.  How long are we doing this?   And what am I going to do with all those little left-over log cabins???

Round 2 complete

I decided, it's complete. On one hand, I just had enough of making these squares, on the other hand I don't want this to get so big and thought it already looks a bit crowded.

And with that decision, I still haven't cut into the 'real stash'. Still using my scraps.

After some pondering I know what to make for the next round, it will be a very simple construction.

Jumping in!

Seems like I've been doing everything except the RR. But I was thinking thinking thinking about it all along. So, at last, I've caught up with triangles and squares and today am working on the latest round by making letters for CASA LOMA which is to be a thank you gift for a British friend. The figures in the piece are done with raw edge applique (my first time) using a novelty fabric that arrived in my WW Swap package. They are just right for this piece as my friend's house is on and island, on top of a hill in the jungle, with mangroves and the sea at the bottom.  Mary in Panama

From 'On point' to ' Square'

For this Round I decided to bring my block 'on square' in which I placed liberated square blocks. This brought the colours from the previous round into the scheme. Now looking forward to the following round.

Liberated Squares On Point

I made my wonky squares on point with the directions in Liberated Quiltmaking II by Gwen Marston. It's an easy and fun technique which uses scissors-cut squares (not quite square) and triangles.

I like my Round 2 borders. When it came to the corner squares, I wanted to introduce gold in case I wanted to use gold later in the quilt. I tried out different gold scraps and chose one I liked, then stitched it all together--and now I think the gold looks weird. Like it's saying: "What am I doing here"? Maybe the gold could have been introduced earlier as a very narrow border near the brown circly print border.

Or maybe I'll want to introduce olive green in Round 3! I'll have to wait and see what Nancy and June have for us next. I'll probably separate Round 2 and 3 with a plain border to set off the patchwork borders. The quilt is now 33" x 33".

Round Two Done

The blue idea went out of the window.  I didn't like the look of it.

I then found these squares which were sent to me by Marit at Quilt It, and fitted them together like a jigsaw puzzle.  Hence the slightly whacky, wonky look.

I'm not too sure where it's going to next, but I'm going to finish this round off with another black border and then perhaps orange, which will hopefully point me in the right direction for the next round.

Trying to let it Talk to Me

Here's my round 2, squares.  I'm not sure where this is going.  I spent a lot of time auditioning colors and it blew me away that the red looked soooo good.  Never would have figured it.  This thing is taking me in new directions.  Color seems to be the key here, but also the patterns in the fabric itself.  The curves in the zebra stripe add loads to this as opposed to stripes or checks.  I can't see the tiny squares/rectangles next to the zebra, but the red ones show up quite well.

Having fun and trying not to stress too much over this.  Not having a plan always stresses me.  I'm a control freak, even in my uncontrolled moments, but I'm totally at the mercy of that center piece right now.  Yikes!

Second Border Completed--for now anyhow!

I wanted to curve the border a bit on this one, but I only had one 2.5 inch WOF of the lovely purple batik.  So far I've finger pressed the squares on.  Will set them with iron when I'm sure and then I'll quilt them into the quilting rather than going around each small square.  I felt it needed something bright, and hope to brighten more as I move out--we'll see how it flows.  My blog: http://pattilousquilts.blogspot.com

round 2 squares

I know round two is all about squares, but I chose to pull out the black and blue from the swirly fabric and echo the circular shape, as well! I love blue and orange, too!
