Liberated Squares On Point

I made my wonky squares on point with the directions in Liberated Quiltmaking II by Gwen Marston. It's an easy and fun technique which uses scissors-cut squares (not quite square) and triangles.

I like my Round 2 borders. When it came to the corner squares, I wanted to introduce gold in case I wanted to use gold later in the quilt. I tried out different gold scraps and chose one I liked, then stitched it all together--and now I think the gold looks weird. Like it's saying: "What am I doing here"? Maybe the gold could have been introduced earlier as a very narrow border near the brown circly print border.

Or maybe I'll want to introduce olive green in Round 3! I'll have to wait and see what Nancy and June have for us next. I'll probably separate Round 2 and 3 with a plain border to set off the patchwork borders. The quilt is now 33" x 33".

Round Two Done

The blue idea went out of the window.  I didn't like the look of it.

I then found these squares which were sent to me by Marit at Quilt It, and fitted them together like a jigsaw puzzle.  Hence the slightly whacky, wonky look.

I'm not too sure where it's going to next, but I'm going to finish this round off with another black border and then perhaps orange, which will hopefully point me in the right direction for the next round.

Trying to let it Talk to Me

Here's my round 2, squares.  I'm not sure where this is going.  I spent a lot of time auditioning colors and it blew me away that the red looked soooo good.  Never would have figured it.  This thing is taking me in new directions.  Color seems to be the key here, but also the patterns in the fabric itself.  The curves in the zebra stripe add loads to this as opposed to stripes or checks.  I can't see the tiny squares/rectangles next to the zebra, but the red ones show up quite well.

Having fun and trying not to stress too much over this.  Not having a plan always stresses me.  I'm a control freak, even in my uncontrolled moments, but I'm totally at the mercy of that center piece right now.  Yikes!

Jumping in ... Sophie's Center

Inspiration struck and I am jumping in ... and hoping to catch up before the next clue. I'm starting with this–something I pieced improvisationally so long ago it's embarrassing.

I have some ideas for triangles and squares–we'll see how well they work when they move out of my head and into cloth.

Second Border Completed--for now anyhow!

 

 I wanted to curve the border a bit on this one, but I only had one 2.5 inch WOF of the lovely purple batik.  So far I've finger pressed the squares on.  Will set them with iron when I'm sure and then I'll quilt them into the quilting rather than going around each small square.  I felt it needed something bright, and hope to brighten more as I move out--we'll see how it flows.  My blog: http://pattilousquilts.blogspot.com

I've made a start

Being new to liberated quilting, it's taken me a while to pluck up the courage to start this project! But when I found this block last week, I thought it had potential and put it up on my design wall. Today I decided that it was time to bite the bullet and play.

The block is from an applique class I did at a Quilt Expo in The Hague just after I first started patchwork. It is one of three or four blocks I brought home but I didn't have the confidence to take it any further. I still have to stitch the small dugong, but that will have to wait until I can buy some matching thread. I forgot to take a photo of the original block before I started playing with it, but it was just the dugongs with blue and yellow border pieces, which I've cut down a bit. The rest of the fabrics came from my drawer of leftover scraps.

There are very few triangles really, but I'm satisfied with it so far because it feels triangular.

round 2 squares

I know round two is all about squares, but I chose to pull out the black and blue from the swirly fabric and echo the circular shape, as well! I love blue and orange, too!

Jan Round 2--Squares

Round 2 was a real challenge for me---I'm not sure why??  Other than the fact I'm a Rookie at this liberated piecing.  I decided a small black border was best for dividing Round 1 & 2.  I tried many squares before deciding on the five little 1 inch squares floating in a border.  I wanted them to be turning more, but couldn't figure it out.  I did introduce a new fabric pattern.  The green border has both dots and squares---hope to use it again in another round.  I'm learning so much with this Round Robin.  I thank our leaders for a great challenge.  I'm headed to my sewing room now to start another Liberated Medallion Quilt, for fun and I need the practice!  I'll talk more about this quilt in my blog:  http://www.familypatchworks.blogspot.com/.  Looking forward to July 1.

Round 2 Squares

Ugh.  I hate being first.  But here goes.  I don't like the center of my Round Robin.  I think I started out too complex with a new process (invisible machine applique)  and with organic shapes which are new to me also.  But I actually do like my Round 1 and Round 2,  I just don't like the center!   I did add some colors as I couldn't envision white, brown and yellow as the total colors for this quilt.  I am having fun so far and find this very challenging.  I have given some thought to replacing the entire center block, but am holding back, hoping some design element, yet to be determined, will pull it all together!  I am really enjoying looking at everyone elses blocks.....I have a blog, not very active yet at..JudysPod

Liberated?

I'm discouraged about my LRR. I think I unliberated it when I added that border print around the original block. I'm thinking about replacing it. What do you think? I'd appreciate feedback. Thanks. Darlene

Triangles added

I like my first block but it is a tad too busy or maybe way too busy so I chose to calm it with the solid blue but carried forward the bike fabric. I like it! I like everyone else's too!

LibRR1 Round 2: Squares!

Thank you to everyone participating in the Liberated Round Robin! I'm in awe of the different ways you have interpreted Round 1: Triangles!

If you are liking triangles and want to expand those in your project - go ahead!  *

But it might be time to think of squares.  Wouldn't your quilt be happier with a set of squares going around one to four sides of your triangles?  I think so..... Go for it!  

Line your squares up so they are all the same size - or make a four-patch and then add a square that is the size of the four-patch. Make a nine-patch, or sixteen-patch. Have squares of different sizes floating on a background. Be controlled by limiting the number of fabrics you use, or be scrappy.

Do what ever square addition you want - but remember the idea of a square is the shape to focus on for this round.

As you finish your square addition, please post a photo of your project on this blog (label it with your name and Round 2 Squares). If you have a blog, and would like us to visit you, include the URL in your post. If you found inspiration or directions online, please include the URLs in your post. Also, take a little time to look at what others have posted and add to the comments!

* BTW: If you need more time to work on your Round 1: Triangles, that's okay! We hope you will also eventually be adding Round 2: Squares to your center block for the Liberated Round Robin!

Cycling in the Center

I'm late to the party but super enthusiastic. This is the challenge I've been looking for!

I'm going with the 50's turquoise/pink/black pallette and fabrics that feature a few of my favorite things - first among them bicycles! I just got this bike fabric from Aunt June on Etsy - the yellow? Isn't it adorable?

Loving everyone's start. Now I can look at part two & see where everyone else is going.

Joy's triangles

This is my triangular border.  This is the second border that I made and I'm still not totally pleased, but I'm thinking that this may be the "ugly" phase and it will come together in the end.  The first border was much more liberated, but too dark.  I'm saving the pieces, I may try to combine them into a different row.  I'm looking forward to new directions.  Sue in mid Mi

Round 1 complete

 

This is how Round 1 ended for me :-) .

I'm not quite sure if I like the small yellow stripe, but I leave it as it is. For now I've only used my scrap bins, I'm curious when I'm going to have to use the 'real' stash .
